DEBKA NEWS:

The IDF spokesman reported a serious incident of a Lebanese soldier shooting 6-10 rounds at an Israeli border patrol vehicle in the Rosh Hanikra sector Sunday, after which Lebanese soldiers poured into the area. The spokesman said Israel takes a grave view of the incident and has called reinforcements to the border region. “We are ready for any step and reserve the right to retaliate at the right place and time,” he said. Before midnight Sunday, the UNIFIL spokesman reported a serious incident in the Ras al-Naqoura and Serra sectors and called for restraint by Israeli and Lebanese commanders. He gave no details of the incident

According to the Lebanese version, an IDF patrol crossed into Lebanon and was fired on by Lebanese troops, after which Israel air force planes flew over southern Lebanon. Lebanese sources later reported that forces on both sides of the border were on alert.

Other sources said the Lebanese army movements were sighted near Sidon in southern Lebanon and that Al Qaeda-linked gunmen of Jund al-Sham and other Islamist organizations were also on alert at the nearby Palestinian Al Hilwa camp. DEBKAfile: The events round Sidon, where Lebanese troops were attacked by gunmen, don’t appear to be connected to the earlier incident on the Lebanese-Israeli border.
